ACADEMIC PROGRAM

City Lights Public Charter School (PCS) uses the DCPS Standards of Learning as adopted by DCPS as the basis of our unique and interactive program that promotes successful achievement for our students.

While at City Lights PCS, each student's life experience becomes a starting point for developing positive self worth. Teachers and their assistants use creative strategies to promote intellectual and social growth among students through acadmic activities using creative and interactive assignments in the classroom, practical exercises, creative writing assignments and the arts.

Students share responsibilities by working in groups to complete academic assignments while exploring interpersonal relationships and learning to respect different points of view.

The City Lights PCS curriculum includes the core academic classes of English, mathematics, history, science, in addition to art and a foreign language.

All students who successfully complete the City Lighs PCS curriculum are eligible to receive a high school diploma.

CLINICAL PROGRAM

The social and rehabilitative services at City Lights Public Charter School (PCS) include individual and group counseling services. Each student is assigned a social worker who provides individual, group and family counseling to help students resolve immediate crises while also giving them the necessary tools to understand the underlying conflicts that inhibit their social, emotional and intellectual growth.

We recognize our students as part of a family unit and rely upon our family outreach program as an integral strategy for maintaining regular school attendance and for fostering personal and academic success. In addition, students participate in group therapies including role playing and socio-drama techniques.

Using a group process for crisis intervention, students learn positive peer mediation, conflict resolution and stress management.
