POSITION: Paraprpfessional

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:  Para Professional                              FLSA:  Exempt

REPORTS TO:  Principal                  

DATE:  07/06

This position description incorporates the core responsibilities of the job.  It is recognized that other related duties not specifically mentioned might also be performed, and that not all responsibilities may be carried out depending on operational needs. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist teachers in teaching all classroom courses
  • Actively participate in all staff meetings and training
  • Ability to learn and assist teachers in:
    o       Positive Peer Culture development

o       Mediation process

o       Behavior management

o       Group process implementation

  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities

GENERAL SKILLS

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all levels of staff and students
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions
  • Good project management and planning skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent attention to details and be organization skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Willingness to take initiative and to follow through on projects

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma and an Associates Degree, or at least 60 credit hours in Special Education or related field or successful completion District of Columbia Paraprofessional Exam
  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Experience working with psycho-educational treatment and principles of the therapeutic community.
  • Must posses a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

Computer Skills

  • Basic knowledge of MS-Office Suite

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct daily class meetings
  • Create and adapt curriculum according to student’s individual learning style
  • Teach basic skills content areas using a variety of motivating instructional methods
  • Work collaboratively with teaching colleagues
  • Demonstrate understanding of psycho-educational treatment and principles of the therapeutic community; form therapeutic relationships with students
  • Write monthly reports and meet paperwork deadlines
  • Demonstrate ability to understand, learn and incorporate the following:

o       Formal mediation process

o       Behavioral management techniques

o       Crisis Intervention

o       Techniques for positive peer culture

  • Other duties as assigned
